THE THROBBING PULSE

An hour's boatride from the hectic port lies the island of elephanta where long ago religious reliefs were chiselled out of a rocky hill . The afternoon gives us a glimpse of bombay's many cosmopolitan faces . A jain-temple of white marble shows the wealth of their community . India's freedom struggle is depicted by a realistic dolls exhibition .

Bombay - Aurangabad - Ellora
THE BLACKCAVE TEMPLE

After arrival by flight at aurangabad we visit the astonishing , grandiose cave temples at ellora . The monolithic kailasa temple is the most gigantic structure . On return to aurangabad step into a different world altogether - arabic lokking markets , islamic buildings and crowded streets .

Ajanta
A DRAMATIC DISCOVERY

Thanks to the british hunting party stumbling upon the caves in 1819 , the remote beauty of the 29 ancient ajanta caves was unveiled to the world . Their isolation has contributed to the fine state of preservation.

5. Day
Aurangabad - Udaipur
OASIS IN THE DESERT COUNTRY

Flight to udaipur , the city of shimmering lakes and rugged hills at the southern spur of the thar desert . Palaces and havelis surround the main lake . The reflecting image of the city palace follows us during our boatride to the island of jagmandir while the view to the famous lake palace hotel fascinates all but the blind .

Udaipur - Ranakpur - Jodpur
FOREST OF ORNATE COLUMNS

Ranakpur , enroute from udaipur to jaipur and relatively unknown on the tourist map , surprises us with one of the absolute highlights of our all india tour - a jain temple built completely out of glittering white marble in all it's grandeur and splendour .

Jodpur
WEALTH OF A MAHARAJA

The enchanted fort of jodhpur straddles the steep rocky eminence that rises over the desert valley . The colour and vibrancy of india's numerous maharajas is seen here on a more princely scale than anywhere else . We can savour the delights of truly gracious living at umaid bhavan palace .

Jodhpur - Bikaner
MARUDESH THE DEAD LAND

A long drive takes us through the great thar . Camel caravans , appearing to be out of the stone age , can be witnessed even in our jet - race times . Lunch at bikaner is followed by a visit to a camel breeding farm , the only one in asia .

Bikaner - Mandawa
NORTHERN DESERT OUTPOST

Bikaner is a royal walled city on the ancient caravan route that linked the great trading centres of medieval times . The junagarh fort , a magnificent complex of marble pillared halls , has delicately painted chambers and mirror - encrusted ceilings . Afternoon drive to mandawa .

Mandawa - Jaipur
AN OPEN AIR GALLERY

Mandawa , a picturesque town with a castle , is famous for its frescoes , patronised by it's inhabitants as recompense for their monochromatic, drab countryside since the 10th century . We arrive at jaipur in the afternoon and have the remaining day for rest .

EXUBERANCE OF COLOUR

For six centuries amber was the capital of the jaipur state . The jai mandir in the stunningly situated fortress - palace is studded with small mirrors which reflect a single candle flame into a thousand flickering lights . Jaipur owes its name to the great astronomer maharaja jai singh . The city palace and the remarkable observatory were constructed by him .

Jaipur - Fatehpur Sikri - Agra
FASCINATING GHOST TOWN

Enroute from jaipur to agra lies keoladeo national park . Birdwatching by cycle rickshaws is a typical indian experience . Afterwards at fatehpur sikri , mughal architecture at its best and well preserved puts us back under the cultural spell .

13. Day
Agra - Delhi
ENSHRINED ROMANC

Agra , the city of the taj mahal , surprises us with an imposing fort and itmad - ud - daulah's tomb besides the final resting place for emperor shah jahan's favourite queen . The taj mahal is a romance in marble and it can boldly claim to be one of the greatest wonmders of the world . We proceed to delhi by train , till date india's most common mode of transport .

14. Day
Delhi - Varanasi
MELTING POT OF HISTORY

Delhi , capital of kingdoms and empires and now a sprawling metropolis has a lot to offer : the red fort the jama masjid , a sikh temple , qutb minar . Old and new delhi , seperated by a few kilometers but ages away in lifestyle and culture , are a window to the indian kaleidoscope . Onward flight to varanasi .

15. Day
Varanasi - Calcutta
SUNRISE AT THE GANGES

Like thousands of pilgrims everyday we witness the rising sun while boating on the holy river ganga . Our walk along the ghats is fascinating and startling alike . After breakfast we visit sarnath , an important town for the buddhist faith . Onward flight to calcutta .

16. Day
Calcutta - Bhagdogra - Darjeeling
THE BEST TEA IN THE WORLD

Our morning flight to bhagdogra is followed by an enchanting drive uphill into the mighty himalayas . Magnificent panoramic views over endless tea plantations to snowy peaks and down to swollen rivers in the valley bottoms .

Darjeeling
QUEEN OF THE HILLSTATIONS

Darjeeling is perched , literally , on the roof of the world . Situated at an altitude of 2134 mtrs in the shawdow of kanchenjunga , the town is a maze of steps and terraces , studded with exotic little bazaars and infused with the aroma of the world's best tea .

Darjeeling - Bhagdogra - Calcutta
BREATHTAKING VIEWS

While driving downhill from darjeeling drink in the poetic , majestic beauty of the himalayas , wholly unspoilt by humanlife . At bhagdogra we board our flight to calcutta .

"THE CITY OF JOY"

India's largest city with approximately 16 million people sums up to many of us the worst we heard of india , but never to a true engali who is inordinately fond of his city with a soul . Calcutta is largely a british creation , carrying weight ever since as the country's cultural centre - and it has scenes of rare beauty not far from the surface . This evening we will reach south india by flight from calcutta to madras .

THE HOLLYWOOD OF INDIA

Madras , a relatively young city , atleast by indian standards , has been founded in the 17th century . The traffic is overwhelming and the most important part of any vehicle seems to be the horn , the louder the better . Crowded markets are a ain attraction , especially the flower bazaar , where blossoms are sold by kilos and not by piece . Within the temple of lord kapaleeswarar the incense and chantings are heady . The afternoon is free for your own explorations .

Kanchipuram - Mahabalipuram
AN ANCIENT KINGDOM

Kanchipuram is one of the seven sacred cities of india. There are about a hundred temples , most of them well preserved . From kanchipuram we proceed to mahabalipuram . The relief arjuna's penance certainly is one of the most photographed monuments in india .

Madras - Bangalore - Mysore
THE GARDEN CITY

Train journey to bangalore . The popularity of bangalore and mysore as residential and garden Cities stem from their many parks and avenues . Enroute to mysore lies srirangapatnam , capital of the muslim ruler tippu sultan .

Mysore - Bangalore
SPLENDOUR OF A FERTILE LAND

With 21 palaces , mysore can proudly claim to be the Palace city of india . The city palace shines out with all the grandeur and splendour of india's royal past.built in the beginning of this century , it is a superb mixture of exotic extravagance and europeon art . Enroute to bangalore , one more highlight awaits us , the exquisitely carved hoysala temple at somnathpur .
